From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Caller Theatrical Poster. Release date. Up went the hammer. Down it came BANG My Favourite character in The Caller is Mr J Jenkinson married to the lovely Cassandra, who falls victim to the "demon" I'm not spoiling the story by sharing that with you We discover that Mr J has a hidden occupation, one that his wife was not aware of, he is a hit man for the mob, and when Cassandra meets an untimely demise Mr J is on the case So with Detective Hunter chasing the demon before he strikes again and Mr J demanding revenge the scene is set for a fantastic conclusion Yes Chris Carter's stories may not be deep, observational and character driven but by god they are great fun to read and once started impossible to stop.

The front of the UK hardback edition states "as compelling as a box-set thriller" and that is a great description.

I hope I do not have to wait 18 months before joining Detective Hunter and his colleague Carlos Garcia on another thrilling outing!

The book is part of Robert Hunter series but it is okay if you have not read the previous books as they stands as separate stories. Jul 18, Jean rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites , zip-library.

The Robert Hunter series by Chris Carter is by far my all-time favorite series! I get so excited when I see another book come out.

Since I'm a Netgalley addict, it's hard for me to fit in a non-NG book onto my reading shelf. But when my library started the zip books program if the library does not own the book and if the book is on Amazon prime, the library will have the book shipped directly to me from Amazon for free!

I read the book and then return it to the library. Hopefully the library will now own this amazing book so others can read it.

Just like his other books, this book is not for the squeamish. This book grips you from the very beginning and is fast-paced.

I couldn't believe how quickly I finished the book. Loved the plot, the characters, the ending. I loved everything about this book!

I definitely recommend this stellar psychological thriller to all. Can't wait for more to come. Nowhere near as gruesome as The Death Sculptor but really, what is Aug 04, Elaine Tomasso rated it it was amazing.

The novel opens with Tanya Kaitlin taking a video call from her best friend Karen Ward and has to watch her being killed when Tanya can't answer 2 simple questions.

According to the killer answering both questions correctly would have saved Karen's life. Unfortunately Karen is only the start. I thoroughly enjoyed The Caller.

Yes, the murders are brutal and Mr Carter doesn't skim on the detail, although I do, but the who and the why are intriguing - I would never have guessed.

The plotting is clever and while you could call Robert's uncovering of the murderer a bit fluky, this often how it works in real life. I was kicking myself that I hadn't seen it!

The novel has a very readable style as both Robert and Carlos are pleasant protagonists and Mr Carter constructs his dialogue well to explain most of the more technical aspects of the novel.

It saves paragraphs of tedious explanation although sometimes it feels that the characters discuss something they should know. I like the fact that the detectives are chasing a very smart perpetrator as it means that clues are thin on the ground and they have to think outside the box.

It may be a bit formulaic on Mr Carter's part and not incredibly realistic but every novel is different enough for it not to be noticeable and it makes for an engrossing read.

The format adds to the reading experience. I'm not normally a fan of varying points of view but in this case it really adds impact to the crimes.

Tanya has just come out the shower and is thinking about her beauty regime when Karen calls. The contrast between her ordinary life before and the broken woman she is afterwards strikes home in a hard hitting way.

Robert Hunter is extremely smart and dedicated with a background in criminal profiling. An insomniac loner he has little in the way of a personal life.

In contrast Carlos Garcia is happily married. The characterisation is sufficiently developed for a plot driven novel but not much more.

It has the feel of a bygone age where the detective solved the crime with no mention of his life or character outside the investigation. Great stuff.

The Caller is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending. This book was recommended to me by a friend and it was superb!

Superb enough to warrant that elusive 5th star that I very rarely give out!! It's an excellent psychological thriller that grabs you from the off.

And, as I'm new to the This book was recommended to me by a friend and it was superb! And, as I'm new to the author, I've just discovered I have 7 more in the series left to read!!!

Kobo, here I come :D Jul 20, Kate rated it it was amazing Shelves: out-inand-read , favourites-read-in I absolutely loved this and read most of it in one sitting.

Robert Hunter is my kind of detective. I must hunt out others in the series. Chris Carter has done it again - another fab instalment in the Hunter and Garcia series!

Hunter and Garcia are on the hunt for a serial killer, who kills his victims by horrific means via video call with their loved ones.

I absolutely love this series and this one was no exception. Definitely not for the faint hearted!

Chris Carter novels are usually incomparable to other novels in this genre; dark, sadistic killers, twisting plots and likable lead characters. I have read and loved them all.

So, when I found that I could pre-order 'The Caller' I clicked the 'add to basket' button hard and fast.

When the book arrived I tried to pace myself, but couldn't hold off for very long I wish that I had been able to hold off a little longer, because I would still be excited about it, and not as disappointed as I am.

A Chris Carter novels are usually incomparable to other novels in this genre; dark, sadistic killers, twisting plots and likable lead characters.

As expected this novel was full to the brim with sadism, blood and gore. The killer was obsessively cruel and I had my nose wrinkled in disgust throughout quite a lot of the novel.

But gore alone does not a good crime novel make. The main reason I read crime novels is because I love trying to work out who the killer is, but that was nigh on impossible in this novel.

There was absolutely no foreshadowing and there were no 'clues'. So many reviewers have said "this novel kept me guessing till the end! Yes, keep us in the dark to an extent we don't want the killer and their motivations unveiled in the first chapter, but reveal these aspects slowly, so that we might piece the plot together ourselves.

Instead of slowly building up clues and foreshadowing, and allowing the reader to connect the dots alongside the detectives, there were only off-page realisations and dots-joined.

Garcia or Hunter would suddenly realise something, which would result in one of them - usually Hunter - giving a multi-page explanation about what had been realised, how and what impact this had.

Yes, this did progress the plot, but it made for terrible reading. Essentially whole pages at a time were explanations given by Hunter about his realisations.

This removed the reader's required effort to connect the dots, because there were no dots to connect, and so fell rather flat.

I would have preferred to see how he came to his realisations and how he followed through, to live it through him.

Not to be told about it all second hand without any chance to reach the same conclusions myself. These explanations also infuriated me when they did happen, because Blake and Garcia - or whoever Hunter was explaining things to - always stared at him blankly, or blinked at him, and it always ended with them not understanding anything and asking for further clarification.

Blake and Garcia may not have the intelligence that Hunter has, but they aren't nitwits. They're still high-ranking police officers and should be capable of following Hunter, even if an early explanation is required and then they pick up the explanation and run with it.

Instead they look to him like a crime messiah. I am also ready to start seeing some personal progression now as well. I'm tired of reading and rereading in every book about his past and career and his love of whisky.

Yes, he likes a single malt whisky, I know. I want something new to get my teeth into, and I thought that was going to come in the form of ole' victory rolls, but Hunter's encounters with her were flat, lacking progression and repetitive.

There were a number of other annoyances throughout the novel that just further knocked my enjoyment, because it just felt sloppy.

Like the spelling errors that were throughout. It just suggested that even the editor hadn't bothered. The most annoying element was that everyone kept talking to themselves.

Again, this felt lazy and like tell-don't-show. Characters would speak out their frustration even though it felt weird and unnatural.

Yes, it succeeded in telling the reader the character's emotions or opinion but I'd much rather Hunter punched a wall so we infer his frustration, rather than him sitting at a computer alone saying, "I am very frustrated.

This certainly wasn't the worst crime novel that I've read, but it was certainly the worst Chris Carter that I've read.

It felt rushed in both writing and editing, and was all too vague and flat. It didn't tick all of the boxes for me.

Jun 09, Vanessa rated it it was amazing Shelves: favourites. I'm not quite into the whole crime investigation books, I feel like most are a bit repetitive and slow.

But the caller and also all of the other books in the series are just incredible. Definitely a page turner. This book is not for the squeamish, so make sure you can handle the gory details before picking this up.

Feb 26, Tazkatie rated it it was amazing. Dark twisted unputdownable page turner. Chris Carter is just a bad ass.

I bought two books by Chris Carter not the x-files fella and decided to read them in sequence, and as they are fairly easy to read even when you consider their content and Chris Carters style of being quite descriptive of the most horrific murders.

This time some I bought two books by Chris Carter not the x-files fella and decided to read them in sequence, and as they are fairly easy to read even when you consider their content and Chris Carters style of being quite descriptive of the most horrific murders.

And the killer does not leave any trace for the LAPD to get any lead at all. This time the killer kills one person and wrecks another person with the guilt of their deaths.

A new take on how to hurt people in a new way. The story has a few surprises but the biggest surprise is how it ends, one minute they are at the scene of the latest murder late at night and the next morning the perpetrator is locked up in a cell.

Somewhat of an anti-climax after going on a journey with Carter his tale. And yet satisfactory as well because somehow it is fitting and different something you cannot accuse Chris Carter of not being just that.

As always far too entertaining for a book with such a dark subject matter but so addictive to read. And I am glad that I have 5 more to read including this years new release.

Well worth your while, start with the first one of have a taster with the 7th book "I am death". I received a pre-release copy of this book.

As always a Great read from Chris Carter. It is a very gripping , on the edge of your seat page turner.

If you've read any of Chris Carter's books and found them scary best you don't read this in the dark. Nov 17, Karthick rated it liked it Shelves: mystery-thriller , serial-killer.

Revenge stuffs!. Well, we finally we get book 8 after a two year wait! I am a huge fan of the Robert Hunter series and was so excited to read this newest release.

As ever Chris Carter excels at dragging the reader straight back into Roberts world. The one thing he is outstanding at is making you feel part of the story.

I would definitely recommend the series from the beginning however you could get away with reading it as a standalone but where's the fun in that?

This latest story throws a particularly grueso Well, we finally we get book 8 after a two year wait! This latest story throws a particularly gruesome and violet killer in our paths.

Karen is the first victim very early on in the book and if you have just eaten I would suggest waiting a while until you start reading as it's not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not for the weak stomached!

The crime scenes are particularly vicious and graphic and frankly quite stomach churning. I always take this as a good sign as when I start to get jittery it means I am 'feeling' the story that much it physically impacts me.

What I loved was the stellar pairing of Robert alongside his colleague Garcia. This pair are meant to work together and although often Garcia can occasionally take a back seat, you the reader is aware if his presence.

The story had a small element running through it regarding Robert's personal life, but as usual with work the thread barely unravelled, so maybe next time that may be re-visited.

I read the first half of the book in one sitting as the writing, characters, pace and general pull of this book was outstanding.

The second half I devoured in a second sitting, so why the 4 stars? Well I have to be honest and say I was a little surprised at the ending, it all seemed to wrap up not only very neatly but extremely quickly.

In comparison to previous books by Carter there always feels like a slow unravel but here it was a little bit "tah-dah, here's the killer".

However without sounding too pompous I don't expect to see those sorts of errors in a fully edited and purchased Kindle book.

Once again this was definitely an excellent read, however I felt it was slightly let down by the ending.

Feb 14, Pat rated it really liked it. Ouch that was brutal. In this instalment Detective Robert Hunter is up against a very sadistic killer indeed.

He video calls someone close to the victim and forces them to play a game one they can't hope to win. The punishment for failure is having to watch their loved one being killed in an ingeniously brutal way.

Hunter and his partner, Garcia, don't have time to draw breath as this killer's timetable is in overdrive. Hunter is struggling to make sense of the various aspects of these crimes Ouch that was brutal.

Hunter is struggling to make sense of the various aspects of these crimes as they don't neatly fit into the box marked 'serial killer'.

Chris Carter is a master of this genre. My only gripe with this book was that the ending seemed a bit too tidy and rushed. If he had drawn the reveal out more it could have made for even more suspense.

Still, overall it was rivetting. Jan 28, Sam H rated it it was amazing. I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of this book. It has been on my wish list for months.

I was not disappointed this book was as amazing as all those that have preceded it. All the favourite characters are back and I must admit to having a crush on Robert Hunter.

The mixture of crime novel with just enough horror is as good as ever. There are parts of this book I simply didn't want to read. The details of the murders are that graphic.

If you haven't read any other Chris Carter books the I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of this book. If you haven't read any other Chris Carter books then don't let that stop you picking this up.

This is simply an amazing, amazing book that I couldn't put down. Apr 20, Sana Zameer rated it really liked it Shelves: mystery-suspense , fiction , crime , law-enforcement-detective , dark.

Another grusome and fast-paced instalment from Chris Carter. This time they are up against a killer who video calls his victims and asks them two questions.

I thought it wasn't as grisly as the other books but the brutal killings and thrill kept me on edge.

The end felt rushed, to me. Robert's decision at the end was lame and impulsive. Still I enjoyed it. Chris Carter has become one of my favorite author.
