Uiteindelijk verwachte ik een flop en weer een film van Shyamalan die niet al te best uit is gepakt. Alhoewel het met de beste man nu weer een beetje de goede kant op lijkt te gaan, heeft hij volgens kritieken een lange periode gehad met niet al te beste films, maar daarin vond ik deze nog best meevallen.
Het is altijd wel opvallend wanneer vader en zoon in een film spelen, maar heel veel chemie is er echter niet tussen de twee Smiths.
Jaden Smith was als kind beter in acteren, hier is hij wat stroever en houteriger. Will Smith weet wel te overtuigen, maar krijgt uiteindelijk niet de rol die de poster doet beloven.
Shyamalan is niet echt een goede actieregisseur. De beste man moet het vooral bij eigenaardige verhaaltjes laten en de CGI-spektakelfilms aan andere namen overlaten.
De CGI vooral op de dieren valt hier behoorlijk door de mand, met een budget dat erg hoog is. Het is soms serieus niveau SyFy, en dat is wel knap.
Alhoewel de designs en locaties er gelukkig wel een stukje beter uitzien, is het wel opmerkelijk dat de monstertjes en dieren dan nog zo slecht uit de hoek komen.
Gelukkig is de film zelf buiten de CGI, wel wat knapper in elkaar gezet. De crash ,de designs en de locaties zijn wel mooi gebracht.
Bovendien weet de film hier en daar nog wat spanning te behouden, en de film verveelt nergens. Het verhaal is interessant genoeg om te blijven boeien en de film duurt niet al te lang.
Er had wat drama weggelaten mogen worden vooral rondom Kravitz maar het tempo blijft gelukkig redelijk hoog. Niet best, maar ik kwam hier best makkelijk doorheen.
Er zijn mindere momenten, maar soms komt de film best aardig uit de hoek en krijgt dan van mij ook een voldoende. Jaden Smith is duidelijk niet heel handig in deze rollen, maar zijn enthousiasme red zijn personage nog maar net.
