Has what is likely my favorite dastardly plot in all of cinema. This may not be my favorite movie of all time, but it's pretty close to perfect, and to give it anything less than 5 would feel disingenuous.

Beautiful animation, a tight story, some broad but engaging characters, and did I mention it has mech suits? The Early Days.
Now I'm coming back after watching all 47 episodes of the TV series, the 16 New Files OVA episodes, the original seven again, and the music video for KMFDM's "Juke Joint Jezebel" ; after all that background-accumulating, I was much more excited to revisit Patlabor 2 than this one, which was rapidly becoming an afterthought as the fondness in my memory somehow dimmed after only half a year, but this first Patlabor movie really is incredible.

Honestly, I thought this was a little boring. It has the Godzilla problem where there's way more of a human component than I expected. It looks good and I think the story is interesting enough but I wish we had gotten more mech action.
I like the main characters but some of them don't feel fleshed out enough. Oldie but goldie. Wer Oshis Werke mag wird auch diesen Anime Klassiker etwas abgewinnen können, auch wenn er schon etwas angestaubt wirkt.
Charm, Unterhaltung und Spannung sind nach wie vor vorhanden. In simple terms, if you're a fan of Patlabor, you'll enjoy this.
I can't really say how it holds up independently from its source material having watched this immediately after the original 7 OVAs , but I think the film does capture a good idea of the series in general and also why I enjoy it.
The film's action and story is exciting and engaging and really well animated of course and all those other things etc.
This as well as the world building and character interactions are as great…. This lacks the big finish I hoped it would have, and in general the ideas feel a little less refined than they do in other Oshii films, but i still enjoyed this way more than i thought i would.
The tone and pacing are near perfect. I like how much information the film let's you infer, and the way the film portrays data really scratches an itch for me.
Sometimes you just have to make assumptions based on the limited knowledge you have, and things will go wrong just because you can't factor in every variable.
That wouldn't work in most mysteries, but it reeeaally works here. Every scene where the characters try to piece together a full picture from the scattered bits of information they have is so good, and i honestly wish the film was all that.
That would limit the audience to "Rainey Chevako and no one else," but I'd appreciate it at least!

While I was only about 12 when I first saw this movie, I think it is fair to say that I initially enjoyed the ending scenes aboard the Ark due to the labour action- and because of this, I wasn't quite as keen on the second one.
It's a film that hits on many levels- younger audiences will enjoy it for the robots, while more mature viewers will become wrapped up in the cunning, socio-political plot with more twists and turns then a labour wiring diagram.
Make of it what you will, everyone will see something differet but either way, its minutes well spent.

The attached episode not only covers this film, but 4 other works by Mamoru Oshii. The first movie of Patlabor shares a tone with the fifth and sixth episodes of the OVA series.
It has some jovial moments, but for the most part is a lot more serious. It's also just as good, if not a bit better. The voice cast is still really solid, despite it being mostly different VA's, and the animation is still really good.
It does have some really slow parts at time, but the ending is so worth it and is genuinely excellent in every way. For the longest time I've always had a distant interest in Patlabor.
A constant intrigue. I'm a huge fan of Mamoru Oshii but it was probably swamped by both his more acclaimed work as well as the far more popular mecha-anime from around the same time period.
It always felt like that one series that was sitting a top a shelf that was just too far to reach. I've seen people describe the Patlabor franchise as a hidden gem and a criminally underrated masterpiece.
After viewing it myself? I wholeheartedly agree. The visuals are as beautiful as you'd expect from Oshii.
Light glows like television static, caught by waves and screens. As if to alert us to the strangeness of this wold, Patlabor begins with a suicide made to look natural.
A man leaps from a ledge of a city under construction, into the sea. The world is no longer built for humans, but machines Labors and code. If Oshii knows how to make this incorporeal fear visible—through flashing screens, abstracted digital visuals—he knows that it derives from something human.
Their dark interiors are overexposed by the light outside that glows like static. I expected somewhat of an action movie based on the artwork, and I couldn't have been more off the mark.
It's actually a dialog-heavy mystery about an operating system upgrade that causes giant mech robot workers to go haywire and the division investigating the cause of it before the damage becomes cataclysmic.
It's super technical about the details, from the tech to real estate development to noise frequencies, which I appreciated, even if I found it difficult to follow along with the fast-paced dialog at times.
