Then as Universal sought a replacement director, Richard Donner was approached and Kenneth Branagh was declined when the studio said the amount he asked for to both star in the film and direct it was too expensive.
Johnson said he harbored no ill will for Cohen taking over the project until he "started hearing the horror stories about how Chuck Pogue was being treated, and then I started seeing Rob taking credit for things that weren't his to take credit for"—e.
Cohen also took credit for Draco's design and Sean Connery being Draco's voice actor. Johnson cites an article from Cinescape magazine "where Rob is again asked about the origin of the project and he basically tries to sell the idea that I was some film student that somehow got attached to this great project that somehow pre-existed my involvement.
When meeting for drinks in Bora Bora , Johnson pitched the idea for Dragonheart to Pogue and he agreed to work on the film.
Together, Johnson and Pogue worked on the script, developing the characters and the Old Code. After the script was completed in , it went unchanged for the next four years, but since it got such a resounding response, Universal fired Johnson in the hopes of getting a more experienced director like Steven Spielberg.
Since Jurassic Park was released and Universal Studios sought to have Draco made with CGI like the dinosaurs, this meant the script had to be altered in accordance with Draco's allowed screen time based on the film's budget.
As a result, Draco would be seen in the film less often compared to his appearances in the original script, which included a sequence with Bowen flying around on Draco's back.
According to Pogue, production on the film became troublesome after Rob Cohen was hired as he felt the director "had neither the poetry in his soul nor the panache to bring Dragonheart to the screen.
For example, there's a scene that was filmed of Kara and Bowen declaring their love for each other, during which Bowen asks Kara for her "lady's favor", Kara reveals she was raped by Einon and therefore has nothing to give Bowen, and ends with Bowen kneeling and giving her a chaste kiss on the hand.
Cohen reportedly removed the scene because he felt Kara should be more of an action-oriented character swinging axes around and didn't believe she would go around making "sappy speeches", but according to Pogue, the scene was cut because Cohen couldn't get the desired performance, which involved having Kara and Bowen in an intimate embrace instead of the kiss on the hand, and got into conflict with Dina Meyer.
This also caused the deletion of a scene with the peasant army giving Bowen a suit of armor they make for him and Bowen being overwhelmed with emotion, which Pogue considered Dennis Quaid's best scene.
Cohen's desire to showcase Draco as the film's main attraction caused vital " connective tissue " scenes of the film to be dropped and as a result made the film feel inconsistent and rushed.
Pogue said the film also suffered because of Universal aiming to turn Dragonheart into more of a kids' movie as the dark and serious elements were either removed or dumbed-down.
As said by Johnson, "They messed with the script and started adding things like, "Ready or not here I come! It's Draco! All this cheesy crap that just juvenilized the picture.
Another change Cohen made to the script that was a bone of contention to Pogue was the lack of logic in the addition of the pigs to the swamp village scene.
In Johnson's words,. Like this village that's surrounded by 10 million pigs, but all the people are starving, and yelling out, "We're starving!
We need meat! Let's kill the dragon," but they're surrounded by pigs! So, I'm trying to find the logic here. I just didn't get that. Pogue explains that Draco uses the scams he and Bowen do as a way to "pick at Bowen's conscience and test his morality" as each village they go to is more poverty-stricken than the last.
This point would come to a head and serve Bowen's character arc at the swamp village where its people are beyond poor and Bowen feels he can no longer justify the scams as a way of being a thorn in Einon's side.
When Cohen added the pigs to the scene, Pogue told De Laurentiis this would make everyone look stupid because the villagers were supposed to be starving, trying to eat a seemingly dead Draco for an easy meal before turning on Bowen, Kara, and Gilbert for being the victims of a joke, and yet they're surrounded by pigs that would have sustained them.
Both Pogue and De Laurentiis brought the illogical nature of adding the pigs to Cohen's attention but he disregarded their concerns, so the pigs stayed in the film and the elements that would serve Bowen's arc were rendered moot.
According to Johnson, the script changes also damaged the character of Einon. Johnson envisioned Kenneth Branagh or a similar actor in the role of Einon as a quiet and confident villain with a sense of unpredictability that would go crazy once he realized that his fate is connected to Draco's.
To Johnson, the script revisions turned Einon into a brat who constantly shouted and a character that couldn't be developed. He knows it, or at least believes it.
He's been saved by a dragon; he's blessed, and unstoppable. An unstoppable guy doesn't go around raging, he's supremely confident and quiet. He kills with a whisper, and not with a scream.
My idea was Kenneth Branagh, or someone of that ilk. They made Einon into this character who had nowhere to go.
Throughout the whole first act of the movie was just screaming and yelling and throwing things around!
He was just being a whiny brat. Where do you go from there? You can't get bigger, and you can't get smaller because the movie is supposed to build.
My idea was for him to just be so quiet and you just wouldn't know what he was going to do next. He had half of a dragon's heart inside of him.
And it isn't until you see this dragon return to come for him, and he realizes that if the dragon dies he's dead, that he really begins to panic, and then he starts to go crazy.
That's what you want, but you don't start there! According to Johnson, he wanted to "animalize" Connery's voice by giving it "deep resounding rumbles, and make the vocabulary such that it didn't sound quite human" so that instead of how it's heard in the final film, "it wasn't just gonna be Sean Connery's voice coming out of the dragon".
Johnson then met the then-up-and-coming Liam Neeson and the two hit it off, with Johnson noting how Neeson could be both brooding and funny.
However, much to Johnson's chagrin, the studio refused to believe Neeson could pull off the action hero role due to him just completing Darkman.
Wanting a big name lead actor for the film, Universal sent the Dragonheart script to actors such as Tom Hanks , Kevin Bacon , [10] and Arnold Schwarzenegger as potential candidates to replace Neeson as Bowen, [4] and even suggested that Whoopi Goldberg do the voice of Draco instead of Connery.
I love Dennis Quaid; I love everything he's done. I just didn't think he should be in 10th century England, any more than Kevin Costner should be in Sherwood Forest.

To be able to stay within the budget that Universal was willing to shell out with Johnson directing, the developers approached Jim Henson's Creature Shop to create the Draco through traditional means.
The dragon model, including a full-size head that could speak in real-time, [7] was done within eight weeks time, and the crew then went to Shepperton Studios in England to begin shooting the film, starting with the campfire scene.
The crew faced difficulties in keeping within the budget. Phil Tippett , a visual effects producer specializing in creature design and character animation, and ILM were hired to work on animating Draco for Dragonheart.
Gareth emerged from the burning pavilion, carrying the dragon eggs with him. Brude had been slain by Rhonu and his warriors defeated. Drago called to Gareth, telling him that he had saved him from the curse.
Gareth remarked, "The village idiot strikes again. Traevor, Rhonu's uncle, called to Gareth, who ran over to find Rhonu lying on the ground, mortally wounded.
Drago handed one of the eggs to Gareth, who placed it against Rhonu's chest, allowing the unhatched dragon to share its heart with her and save her life.
The next day marked the dawn of a new era, when there was peace between the peoples to the north and south of the wall.
Drago happily soared through the skies as Sir Gareth became the new leader of the settlement, and the dragon that had saved Rhonu began to hatch.
Drago and Gareth remained friends for the rest of their lives. In the future Gareth, besides ruling the kingdom, also helped Drago to raise the dragons born of the eggs to be friends of humanity as it has been part of Drago's duty.
However, all of this also took time away from Gareth's son called Walter. When his mother Rhonu died, after the dragon she was bonded with died tragically when struck by lightning, disconsolate Walter decided to leave the kingdom and his future throne.
Drago tried to convince him not to leave but Walter threatened him with a dagger, saying that he and the other dragons have only taken everything that was dear to him, upon hearing this, Drago apparently feeling guilty, certain that by taking time from Gareth about raising the dragons far more than his son would have wanted, Drago was silent and did not follow Walter when he left.
Several years later, at Gareth's request, Drago tried to find Walter several times but never had success in his search.
Years after Walter left the kingdom, when the aging King Gareth is dying, Drago joins his friend in what is to be their final moments.
Drago expresses his guilt for Walter's departure, saying that the estrangement of Gareth's family was his greater failure, and therefore will not earn his place in the stars.
When Gareth dies, Drago is shocked to survive because he feels his heart faintly bonded with someone else. He finds a young man named Edric , who has the strength of three men.
Surprisingly, Drago discovers that Edric is Walter's son and therefore Edric is made the new king. Drago soon discovers that Edric had a twin sister named Mehgan , who had the ability to control fire.
However, they did not always get along because of their differences in the past. The villagers called Mehgan a wicked witch and cursed because of her power and the scales on her face, so she was forced to stay hidden while Edric was able to a life due to his great strength earning him many admirers, until one time when his father Walter died apparently because of Mehgan who accidentally burned the house with the inside, Edric was forced to send a Mehgan to a boat avoiding that the villagers killed it, but this action also made very sad to Mehgan.
Drago, Edric, and his army confront a Viking army and their leader. When their leader is wounded by an arrow, Drago feels pain in response, and the Vikings' leader is revealed to be Mehgan.
As she and Edric talk, Mehgan says she only control fire but can't create it and asks Drago how he does it. Drago tells her about the Heartfire , the source of a dragon's flame and life-giving power, and offers to eventually teach her how to develop her skill.
Then Mehgan and Edric debate the throne, which Mehgan believes should be hers since she's the older twin. After some tough love from Drago and being forced to fight each other, Edric and Mehgan put their differences aside and defeat the Vikings that took over the kingdom.
However, Mehgan is wounded by arrow as they try to retrieve Drago's stolen Heartfire, and even though she and Edric offer Drago his Heartfire back as he is dying, Drago refuses and demands that Edric gives the last of his Heartfire to Mehgan in order to save her.
At peace with the knowledge that Gareth's family is together again, Drago passes away and his soul ascends to the constellation Draco, joining his fellow dragons in their heaven, with his last words to the twins being, "Rule wisely together.
And listen to your hearts. Drago was a very wise and noble dragon with a strong sense of humour and also loyal to his friends.
He saw Gareth as a potential knight for soul instead of class. He does not like humans making assumptions on him as Gareth guessed that the eggs he brought were his.
In Dragonheart: Battle for the Heartfire , Drago also proved to be selfless even though it cost him his life, when Edric and a dying Meghan wanted him to take back his life source, his Heartfire, so he would live, but he urged them to use the last of it to save Meghan's life before his soul went up into the dragon heaven within the constellation Draco.

The twins meet for a parley where Drago teaches them about the Heartfire, the source of his fire breath. Mehgan demands that she be given the throne as the firstborn twin, but Edric refuses and ends the negotiations.
Overnight, Mehgan and her army sneak into the camp, and she drains the Heartfire from Drago while he sleeps.
When the Norsemen start their attack, Mehgan reveals her control of the Heartfire. Overwhelmed by Mehgan's power, Edric has no choice but to surrender.
Once Mehgan and the Vikings secure control, she banishes Edric, unaware that Thorgrim sent men after him against her wishes.
Edric flees to Robert's shire and requests aid in opposing Mehgan, only for his former Earl to betray him to the Vikings. He is then taken aboard a ship bound for Norway to be sold into slavery.
While Mehgan goes on to improve women's rights in the kingdom, she tells a captive Drago what happened after Edric sent her away.
After getting caught in a storm that threw everyone but her into the sea, she was set adrift until she ran aground in Norway, where her powers earned her the attention of Thorgrim.
Edric tries to escape his captors, only to nearly sink the boat. He is saved by Drago, who was freed from his captivity by locals.
Edric and Drago receive aid from a theatre troupe, where the two reconcile, and Edric reveals his guilt over his hateful last words to his father and sending his sister away alone.
With the help of the troupe, Edric and Drago sneak into the royal castle. When Edric goes to take the Heartfire from Mehgan, he sees a Viking attempting to kill her.
His warning saves her life, but their refusal to work together allows the Viking to take the Heartfire to Thorgrim, who promptly turns his men against the twins.
Drago saves the twins from being captured, then forces them to fight to the death for the throne. They fight and argue until they begin to remember how close they were as kids.
Mehgan reveals that Edric accidentally killed their father: to protect his chances of having a good life, she took the blame herself.
The truth moves them both to reconcile and work together against the Vikings. Returning to the castle, Edric challenges Thorgrim to combat in a bid to steal back the Heartfire while Mehgan rallies the women of the castle to help her fight the Vikings.
