The night the king and queen arrive, Daisy discovers LeHand is having an affair with Roosevelt. LeHand tells a shocked Daisy that their respective relationships with the president are not his only ones, mentioning Dorothy Schiff and Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd , and that Daisy must accept sharing Roosevelt with other women.

At the picnic the next day the king successfully eats a hot dog for a photo op, and Daisy, in a voiceover, states that the visit helped the two countries form a Special Relationship.

Daisy rejects Roosevelt's requests to see her until he calls on her in person; they reconcile, and Daisy accepts her role as one of the president's mistresses.

As years pass, Daisy watches Roosevelt become frail as a wartime leader; nonetheless everyone, she says, "still [looked] to him, still seeing whatever it was they wanted to see".

Screenwriter Richard Nelson was inspired by the story of Daisy Suckley after reading a posthumously published collection of her letters and diaries.

He felt drawn to the story because of the unique perspective Daisy offered on a series of important historical events. He also connected with the setting, since Nelson lives in Rhinebeck and had even met Daisy briefly before she died in Originally conceived as an idea for a film, Nelson's choice of director, Roger Michell , proved immediately unavailable.

Nelson re-worked the script as a radio play, which was produced by the BBC in , directed by Ned Chaillet.

Once Michell became available, production began on the film. In early March , director Michell started searching for U. Hyde Park on Hudson had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on 31 August , then at the Toronto International Film Festival on 10 September , and again at the Savannah Film Festival on 31 October , with limited release in the United States on 5 [9] and 7 December , and wide release in January The UK release followed on 1 February Hyde Park on Hudson received mixed reviews from critics.

The site's critical consensus reads, "Though bolstered by a thoroughly charming performance by Bill Murray in the central role, Hyde Park on Hudson is an FDR biopic that lets down both its audience and its subject.

The A. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times enjoyed the film, giving it 3-and-a-half stars out of 4 and said of Murray's performance: "Murray, who has a wider range than we sometimes realize, finds the human core of this FDR and presents it tenderly.

It conveys something of a transparent experience, suggesting that the power of the subject escapes the attempt to contain it in a film and makes its way directly—albeit incidentally or even accidentally—to the viewer.

Production designer Simon Bowles won an award from the British Film Designers Guild on 27 January for his production design on this film.

However, there is no direct evidence that he had a similar relationship with Suckley, [3] [4] [5] though there was an emotional connection.

There are a lot of remarkable aspects to the story depicted here, not the least of which is that the subject of FDR's physical restrictions are almost never dealt with directly although they are always present.

It's almost as if his physical disability is a minor intrusion or inconvenience more than a life altering challenge. His very full life is awe-inspiring; his physical limitations did not stop him from achieving remarkable things, and although not at all the focus of the film, this reality gives one pause when pondering the meaning of the word "disability.

The death of F D R is an unforgettable date,if that was your era.. F D R gave him a hotdog, plus a promise of more..

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. A nice little film, the scenery is pretty and the contemporary music inspired.

Considering how slight the story is I'm surprised that it attracted such a very good cast. The depiction of the British royal couple is pantomime - its a fairy story, so go with the flow.

Where it loses points is for the fact that when it said it had subtitles, what it didn't say is that you can either have the film in English with Italian subtitles or the film in Italian with English subtitles.

What you can't have is the film in English with English subtitles. Since I wanted to watch it with my mother who is hard of hearing and needs the subtitles , this was a big disappointment.

Film itself is OK insomuch as - beautifully shot, hits all the history markers well at a higher level than 'Downton' etc but in the end it's a love-me- in America piece.

Laura Linney is as good as ever and Olivia Colman does her 'Queen but worried' thing well with the relatively little the film affords her; if shot now post 'The Favourite' doubtless the film would have shown women in a far more inclusive and equal way, taking initative rather than adapting and offering help to existing dynamics.

We enjoyed it. Report abuse. Quick delivery no fault of seller that this is a very silly film with dismal acting.

They got along very well with the President and his wife, reportedly the President was fatherly towards the much younger man, the King.

And none of the Queens noted charm comes across in this film, it could have been good, it isnt. This is a gentle slow story which intertwines the special relationship of Daisy, a rather dowdy distant cousin of Franklin Roosevelt with the president and how she comes to manage the realisation that he has other 'special relationships' too.

This all happens very slowly, and could have been covered in about 20 minutes. The main event of the film is the visit to the USA of King George VI shortly before the outbreak of the second world war in the attempt to gain help for the upcoming war effort.

The culture clash of the once mighty British Empire now rather supplicant to the new power of the United States is almost painful to watch at times, with Roosevelt, although broadly sympathetic, unable to resit a little fun at the royal family's expense - not least by introducing them to eating the least royal of delicacies - the hot dog.

Pleasant enough viewing- historically interesting about the development of the Special Relationship- but slow, slow. One person found this helpful.

This is another one of those DVDs which I decided to purchase because of the actor names taking part - in particular the never-disappointing Olivia Colman.

Sure enough, Colman didn't disappoint, or indeed did any of the excellent leads. This film seems to be the latest in a new format - taking a slim story apparently FDR had a series of mistresses - interesting concept, since he was paralyzed from the waist down and using it to create a vehicle for big stars, which will then of course bring in the viewers.

No mention was made of the speech given by the Queen to the women of America, which I understood was pivotal at the time. Whether true or not, it made me feel a bit sad that this is the way Holywood has decided to remember America's greatest President.

However, as the movie progresses, Margaret's presence and character becomes increasingly less important and interesting.

As the characters develop and the drama unfolds, it becomes clear the only real constant theme here is the shedding of false ideas about others and the self.

The relationship he creates with King George VI was a display of the best writing and acting in the whole film. The two stay up late talking, sharing with one another what they feel is expected of them by their families, their countries, and themselves.

They wind up drinking and comparing their physical imperfections, polio and stuttering. It seems to be a profound moment in which they become comfortable with one another, themselves, and the unity between their countries.

From this point on, all of the relationships become more real and approachable. The King and Queen endure a sleepless night lighting one another's cigarettes, the President is shown to be an average man in many ways although brilliant , and Margret's fantastic ideas about her place in the presidents life are boiled down to a much more realistic perspective.

Although some relationships between characters are enjoyable, the writing that takes us there is shaky. Margaret is introduced so strongly, and we are convinced she will play an important role, but she seems to disappear as soon as another plot point comes along.

Her character seemed more of a cheap vessel to create momentum than an actual developed character. She becomes less interesting than every other character, and I end up wishing to see more of Eleanor Roosevelt Olivia Williams and the Queen Olivia Colman.

While the writing often feels loosely knit, the camera work is never disappointing. The scenery is beautiful and simple. It reflects these characters that are learning about themselves.

It is bare bones and lovely. Hyde Park on Hudson had its moments. However this film could have been so much better. It felt like Nelson forgot about his own plot.

The gaps he left were huge and left me wondering why there were so many lose ends. The script needs to be beefed up and full cooked.

There's still pink in this meat. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show.
